A former journalist who has taught Freshman Composition at a number of universities, Salli is a strong believer in the power of education and language to inspire hope and open-mindedness. Her efforts on behalf of underprivileged youth include developing campus recruitment tools to boost college enrollment among minorities, founding a mentoring program that targeted rising 4th grade at-risk African American males in urban public schools, and establishing a community SAT prep scholarship program for low-income high school students. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin (B.A., 1977) and University of California-Berkeley (M.J., 1979) and joined College Summit in January 2001.
Mary Garvey is a graduate of Georgetown University (B.S., 2005) and a New York City native. While at Georgetown Mary majored in International Politics, with a focus on International Law, and minored in Justice and Peace Studies. A graduate of the New York based Prep for Prep program Mary comes with an inherent passion for education and serving our young people. She actually wrote her thesis on the educational disparities in the public education, focusing on NY State. Mary has a broad range of experience which includes serving as an Americorps member and tutor for Heads-Up DC, working as a Communications intern for The Children’s Health Fund, and also serving as the Chapter President for the Georgetown NAACP.
Michael Gemm, a graduate of Indiana University (B.S. 1996) and the University of Notre Dame (M.B.A. 2002), joined College Summit in 2004 as Manager of Finance and Accounting, where he worked until moving to Project Manager, New Sites in the Spring of 2006. Michael began his non-profit journey after business school and following several years of experience in business and accounting. Before joining College Summit, Michael was an Americorps volunteer at a homeless organization and a fundraising consultant to regional and national organizations. In addition to serving as a Director of New Sites, Michael also serves as a Rap Director at College Summit’s summer workshops
Joe George was born, raised, and has lived in the DC Metropolitan region all his life. He has almost eight years in the IT field and has a good familiarity of non-profits as his field of study as an undergrad was in the non-profit arena. As far as his IT background goes, he has worked in non-profits, but was also a consultant doing support for the DC Government’s Office of the Chief Financial Officer, along with various other small businesses in the region. In his spare time, he enjoys playing beginner’s classical guitar, keeping up with the news, and listening to music of all kinds. He also enjoys sports like soccer and basketball. Joe grew-up in a South Indian Christian family with two sisters, with him as the the middle.
Prior to joining College Summit in 2005, Georgia worked in a variety of capacities for several national socially entrepreneurial organizations. As a Project Manager for KaBOOM!, she led more than 30 community-inspired playground projects. She later became their Vice President of Marketing, where she launched a new Website, wrote a set of community-building manuals and collaborated on national cause-marketing campaigns. In 2001-2003, she served as the Director of School Programs for Hands On Atlanta and managed several AmeriCorps programs focusing on literacy and after-school programming in Atlanta’s public schools. Georgia has a BA from Dartmouth College, a MA in Latin American Studies from Stanford University and a MEd from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education.
Sarah is a graduate of Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio (B.A., 2003). Shortly after graduating college Sarah moved to Washington, DC to pursue a career in social justice and advocacy. She began working as a political fundraiser for several non-profits including the National Jewish Democratic Council and the Ethics Resource Center. Sarah joined the College Summit team in the summer of 2007.
A graduate of Princeton University (A.B., Economics) and Fordham University School of Law (J.D.), Tom is a southpaw Hoosier by birth but calls five other states home. While practicing commercial litigation in New York City, he pursued two passions in his spare time: writing fiction and volunteering as a Writing Coach for College Summit. In October 2006, he chose to pour his creative energies and advocacy skills into College Summit and giving all high school youth the greatest gift imaginable-- the achievement of human potential through a college education.
