WAMU covers the National Capital Region's 2008 Peer Leadership Awards

"In many Washington area high schools, students don't know how to apply to college, what financial aid is available or even whether their grades are good enough for admission. One organization, "College Summit," is helping to support what they call a "college-going culture" in D.C. schools. Kavitha Cardoza has more..."

Listen to Jessica Bravo, Peer Leader at  Washington Lee High School, and Dean Furbush, President of College Summit, talk about the support needed in post secondary planning

College Summit’s 2008 Peer Leadership Awards

Social incentive is a powerful force, especially for teenagers. Peer leadership is a critical component of our strategy to increase college enrollment rates in low-income communities. Influential, “better-than-their-numbers” high school seniors can drive lasting culture change. We equip such students, through our transformational summer workshop, to bring college culture to their schools. Our 10-year track record of success is in low-income communities where high school dropout and college enrollment rates for high school students are below national norms.

This past summer, approximately 300 rising seniors from National Capital Region high schools attended one of our eight workshops, held at local college campuses. At each workshop, students underwent an intensive, empowering, four-day training during which they became infused with the determination and commitment to attain a college education and to encourage their fellow students toward the same goal. During their senior year – with the help of College Summit-trained teachers and local College Summit staff – these influential students are now working to build a college-going culture in their schools and communities.

Our unique, year-long program culminates with our Annual Peer Leadership Awards ceremony. This is an annual awards ceremony where the College Summit-National Capital Region Team celebrates the accomplishments of its Peer Leaders, educators, and partner high schools. During the event, we celebrate the successes of all of our partners, share personal stories, and present three awards based on the nominations of Peer Leaders and their teachers – College-Going Culture School Award, Outstanding College Summit Educator Award, Peer Leadership Award. This year, we plan to host the Peer Leadership Awards at Howard University’s Blackburn Center on April 29, 2008.

If you are interested in attending or sponsoring a table at the event please send all correspondence ltwiggs@collegesummit.org.

Second Annual Peer Leadership Trainings

In October, the National Capital Region hosted its Second Annual Peer Leadership trainings, where over 200 current Peer Leaders from across the region were present. The trainings, which where held at two of the National Capital Regions partner high schools, Suitland and C.H. Flowers, gave the Peer Leaders the opportunity to tap the power within and gain more insight as to how they can use their own leadership styles to create a college-going culture within their schools and community.

During the training, they were given the chance to learn about various leadership styles, such as outspoken, thinker/planner and one-on-one. They aslo had the opportunity to reconnect with other Peer Leaders that they had met over the summer at their workshop. All involved came away feeling empowered and motivated to change the culture in their schools; to ensure that all college-capable students have the chance to succeed in college.

Many thanks to Suitland and C.H. Flowers for letting the National Capital Region host the trainings at their schools.
