When Energy Corporation of America (ECA) introduced College Summit to Kanawha County, West Virginia in 2001, the goal was to transform college-going in all public high schools serving the state capital, and to do so in such a way that sustained the innovation into the future and built a foundation from which the program could spread throughout the state. Five years later, College Summit-West Virginia and its partners are well on their way to reaching this goal. From a “test pilot” in the summer of 2001, when ten Kanawha County students attended an out-of-state College Summit workshop, College Summit’s reach has increased each year, to the point that during the 2006-2007 school year the program will serve a total 2,000 students in 11 counties.
Through the 2005-06 school year, College Summit West Virginia has served a total 3,000 youth. These students have attended a variety of two-year and four-year institutions of higher education, as well as such postsecondary options as technical training programs and the military. Students who have attended a workshop have enrolled in college at an average rate of 79%. The enrollment rate for College Summit-West Virginia’s workshop attendees in the 2004 and 2005 high school graduating classes was 83%.
