HIGHLIGHTS
2007-08:
-Our in-school trial program began in Miami-Dade County. 33 peer leaders were trained at a summer workshop hosted by Nova Southeastern University to serve 245 students at two partner schools (Miami Senior High, North Miami Beach Senior High).
- 79% of participants submitted at least one college application (a leading indicator of college enrollment (82% at Miami Senior High School and 75% at North Miami Beach). Most current data available shows prior to College Summit, these schools had college enrollment rates of 63% and 61% respectively.
2008-09:
-Increased outreach to serve 1,100 students at 4 partner schools (Miami Senior High, North Miami Beach Senior High, Miami Jackson High, and Miami Northwestern Senior High).
-185 students attended one of 4 summer workshops at Nova Southeastern. In August, these influential college-bound students then participated in a Peer Leader Training Academy to further explore their role as leaders in their schools, and collaborated on program ideas and initiatives to help foster college-going culture during the school year.
-Peer Leader Spotlight. In July, Miami Senior High Peer Leader Frank Diaz Cabrera traveled to the College Summit Institute (CSI) in Baltimore to introduce keynote speaker Dr. Rudy Crew, then superintendent of the Miami-Dade Public Schools. Frank is currently a freshman at Embry-Riddle, where he plans to major in aerospace engineering. (CSI is a national 3-day learning experience for educators searching for new ideas for building and sustaining a college-going culture at their school.)
