Northern California

College Summit first took root in California in 2002 when 46 students and a handful of teachers drawn from high schools in Oakland and the Central Valley took part in a workshop hosted by Stanford University. In the ensuing years, College Summit has worked with over 10,000 students and over 40 high schools throughout Northern California – partnering with school districts including Oakland Unified and San Jose Unified, charter management organizations including the Aspire Public School system, and other charter schools including Oakland School for the Arts and Leadership High School (SF) – all in order to ensure that more of our low-income talent actualize their college readiness and enroll in college.

We are currently working with over 1,600 students and 12 high schools in the Bay Area, while maintaining college enrollment rates for our student Peer Leaders of over 79% (compared to 52% for low-income high school graduates nationally), and as our students are beating second-year college persistence rates for students from all income levels. We remain dedicated to educational access and post-secondary opportunity for all California students.

The Summer of 2012 was our 11th Summer in California and we have trained a cohort of 187 Peer Leaders and over 50 educators for the 2012-2013 school year.

Peer Leader of the Year Profile

Claudia Suarez won the distinguished 2012 Peer Leader of the Year Award at our Heart, Mind and Spirit Awards ceremony at Scott’s Seafood in Oakland this past spring.  The Peer Leader of the Year exemplifies all three of our values: the heart of a great teacher, the mind of an innovator, and the spirit of an inspired student. Claudia comes from a Spanish-speaking family that is unfamiliar with the requirements to get into college.

Educators' Academy: Our Educators' Academy Season is underway. We kicked it off on July 26th at Lionel Wilson College Prep and have held four Educators' Academies since then. Our Program Team trains educators at school-site-based Educators' Academies, which are professional development sessions that are tailored to meet the needs of each school. At these sessions, we provide in-depth training on our curriculum, our student data portals (CSNav and Naviance), instructional strategies, and on ways to engage peer leaders, all in support of strengthening college-going cultures and increasing access to college. So far we have trained 32 educators and counselors and look forward to the rest of our site-based Educators' Academies.
