Peer Leaders & Alumni

Peer Leaders:

One of the most unique characteristics about College Summit South Carolina is the passion and effort the students put into building a college-going culture. Even from our original Peer Leaders back in 2004, College Summit South Carolina students boldly make the desire to ignite others about college.

Wilson High School is one of the leading high schools within the region. Recent recipient of the 2008 Deloitte Award for exemplary work with the College Summit Curriculum, Wilson students and staff work hard at making sure their school has a college-going culture. Peer Leaders have worked on various projects including the following:

•    Hosting a SAT/ACT drive during the fall for all seniors
•    Hosting a college fair at their school featuring numerous colleges from the area
•    Members went to the 100 Black Men of Atlanta College Fair

Alumni:

Alumni play a special role at College Summit South Carolina. They are the proof that going to college IS possible. Even though a student may fear the chances of getting into college, to know that they know someone who was just like them achieve the goal is always an inspiration. College Summit South Carolina Alumni are just influential at workshops, but throughout the year as well.

A minute in the life of an alumnus…
Alumni Spotlight- Jessica Dupree

CS) How did you find out about College Summit?
A:    I was selected by my guidance counselor. We were pulled into a meeting with two members of College Summit staff, and both of them highly suggested we apply to go. At that point I was excited to go.

CS) What were your thoughts about your Peer Leader Workshop when it was completed?
A:    I was actually amazed to say we did all that in a short time! We went from excitement to confronting obstacles, so quickly.  It [the workshop] made me grow as a person.

CS) What are your experiences like working as an Alumni Leader during the summer?
A:    It is good, it had it had its challenging moments, but with College Summit, its always challenging yourself to bring the best out of you.

CS) What do you do throughout the year to spread a college-going culture?
A:    I try to check-in with Peer Leaders that I’ve worked to make sure they are progressing. I also volunteer with Boys & Girls Club and Circle K. As a college student, I try to be example that just as I am in college and successful, they can be to.

Alumni Spotlight- Tymon Graham

CS) How did you find out about College Summit?
A:    College Summit came to our high school and told us about this program called College Summit and how it would be a lot of fun. We would be able to go to workshop on a college campus and that our only requirement was that we had to apply to go.

CS) What were your thoughts about your Peer Leader Workshop when it was completed?
A:    It made me really “hype” about my Senior Year and more anxious. I was ready to got submit some applications.

CS) What are your experiences like working as an Alumni Leader (and for you Alumni Leader Coordinator) during the summer?
A: I try working as an Alumni Leader or Alumni Leader Coordinator as if it’s an internship. Everything I do during the summer at College Summit is what I want to do professionally.

CS)  What do you do throughout the year to spread a college-going culture?
A:    Though I’m an upperclassman, I’m still connected with students that attend my high school. I help to make sure they are taking care of their business (submitting applications, making the grades, etc.)
