In schools that use College Summit, teachers manage the application and financial aid process, and help build college-going culture within their classroom. With teachers providing this extra set of hands in the postsecondary planning effort, guidance counselors -- who often carry a student load ranging from 300 to 1,000 students per counselor – are better able to provide their expertise on everything from course selection to family involvement. With College Summit tools, counselors and teachers alike are able to view all students’ progression in the college application process, to more quickly pinpoint where extra support is needed most.
College Summit equips teachers and counselors with what they need to play those roles and support all their students through postsecondary planning and college admissions. Teachers and counselors receive comprehensive training at the College Summit Institute, formely known as the Educators' Institute, each summer. Training sessions include supporting students through the financial aid process, teaching personal essay writing, leveraging peer leadership and engaging parents in the college planning process.
Educators work with and learn from other educators- from their own schools and districts and other schools across the country- during the College Summit Institute. Then throughout the year, College Summit staff members facilitate ongoing professional development directly with the educators in each individual school.
