Goal Setting in the Navigator

In President Obama’s recent back to school address to students, he challenged youth to take responsibility for their education. One clear call to action was for students to set goals, “That’s why today, I’m calling on each of you to set your own goals for your education—and to do everything you can do to meet them.”

Goal-setting is hard enough for adults, much less young people. But it’s clearly an important step in planning and preparing for life after high school. To help students and teachers think meaningfully about setting personal and academic goals, College Summit has made excerpts from its Navigator curriculum available online. The College Summit Navigator is a textbook and curricular framework for the senior year that supports all students in making a successful transition to life after high school.

The following lesson plans and student materials were adapted from the College Summit Navigator curriculum.

These lesson plans can be used by any educator in any classroom setting to help students:

Lesson 1: Set short-term academic goals and create an action plan for meeting them
Lesson 2: Personalize your goals
