College Summit Alumna and Board Member, Andrea Black, Speaks at Fast Company Social Capitalist Awards Dinner
On January 8, 2008, College Summit was privileged to receive two honors during the Fast Company Social Capitalist Awards dinner: College Summit's fifth consecutive Social Capitalist Award and the United States Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the Schwab Foundation.
During the dinner, Andrea Black, College Summit Alumna (University of Chicago Workshop 2000) and Board Member addressed the audience. In her speech, Andrea praised all the organizations that were honored that night for their "passion to create lasting change in the face of tough challenges." She went on to describe how, with support of College Summit, she was able to "retrace her steps and use her past as fuel for her future." She also explained that College Summit allowed her to understand that she was better than her numbers and that the 'possibility' of college was closer than she thought.
As a 2005 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Fisk University, Andrea now is a first grade teacher at W.J. Scott Elementary School in Atlanta, Georgia where everyday she instills in her students the 'possibility' of college and the impact it can have on their lives. For the last seven years, Andrea has also volunteered at College Summit Workshops in various capacities, ranging from Alumni Leader to Workshop Director.
