Peer Leadership

College Summit trains groups of students over the course of the summer to equip them with the tools they need to be change makers in their own high schools. These ‘Peer Leaders’ work with staff and volunteers at workshops to get ten steps ahead of the application process. They then take the tools they learn at the workshop, both academic and emotional, to assist teachers and other students in creating a college-going culture during their senior year.

A peer leader not only has to be influential among his/her peers but be:

  • Nominated by his/her College Summit trained teachers and counselors to attend
  • Academically mid-tier with a GPA between 2.0 and 3.0 on the standard 4.0 scale
  • Considered to be better than his or her numbers (grades/scores)
  • Able to take the College Summit course during his/her senior year.

After the workshop

The spirit and energy these students infuse in their high schools is nothing short of phenomenal. Working in tandem with College Summit trained teachers, these students up their game in the fall and challenge their classmates to do the same. Peer Leaders charge back into their schools fully aware that they have been chosen for their innate talents to create a movement for higher education.

Some of the things Peer Leaders have organized in their schools/communities include:

  • College fairs/tours
  • Writing Seminars (helping peers with personal statements)
  • Financial Aid Sessions
  • Recruitment Events for next years Peer Leaders
  • Mentoring
  • College Prep Rallies
  • College Newsletters
  • SAT /ACT Prep Courses
